Commercial installations
Power, lighting and distribution for shops, offices, workshops and small commercial units, installed to BS 7671 and planned around your trading hours. Across Bristol, Bath and the South West.
What we do
We work with small and medium-sized businesses and landlords of commercial premises: shops, offices, cafés and restaurants, workshops, warehouses and small industrial units. Typical work includes:
- New and replacement distribution boards, single-phase and three-phase.
- Sub-mains to outbuildings, mezzanines or separate parts of a unit.
- Power and data containment: trunking, conduit and cable tray.
- LED lighting upgrades to replace old fluorescent fittings.
- Emergency lighting, installed and tested.
- Electrics for fit-outs and refits, from a new shop counter to an office refurbishment.
- Supplies for machinery and equipment, such as compressors, commercial kitchen equipment and workshop machines.
- Periodic inspection and testing.
As a small independent business, we're best suited to small and medium-sized commercial jobs, and we'll tell you honestly if a project needs a larger contractor.
When you might need it
- You're moving into new premises or changing how a space is used.
- You're adding equipment and the existing board has no spare capacity.
- Lighting is dim, flickering or expensive to run.
- Emergency lighting is missing, faulty or overdue for testing.
- An inspection report or your insurer has flagged work that needs doing.
- Your periodic inspection is due. Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, employers must keep electrical systems safe, and regular inspection is the usual way to show it. See EICR & safety checks.
What affects the cost
Every site is different, so we don't publish set prices. The main things that make a difference are:
- The size of the premises and the number of circuits.
- Whether the supply is single-phase or three-phase, and the size of board needed.
- Ceiling heights, access, and whether work has to happen outside trading hours.
- The type of containment: surface trunking, conduit, or tray above a suspended ceiling.
- The light fittings and equipment you choose.
We'll look at the site and give you a clear quote before any work starts.
Keeping your business running
- We agree a schedule with you, which can include early mornings, evenings or weekends, so you can keep trading.
- Power only goes off when it has to, and we tell you in advance.
- Work areas are kept safe and tidy for staff and customers.
- Everything is tested before it goes live, and circuits are clearly labelled.
- You get an Electrical Installation Certificate or a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for your records.
Keep your premises compliant, year round
Most businesses have several electrical and fire safety checks to keep on top of, each on its own timetable. We can look after them together, with one contact and one schedule:
- Fixed wire testing (EICR): typically every three to five years depending on the premises, or sooner if the last report says so.
- Emergency lighting: a short function test every month and a full-duration test once a year, recorded in your logbook, as BS 5266 recommends.
- Fire alarm servicing: usually every six months under BS 5839-1, alongside the weekly call-point tests your staff carry out.
- PAT testing: at intervals set by your own risk assessment. There's no fixed legal interval, so an office kettle and a building-site drill won't be on the same timetable.
- Reactive callouts: a 24/7 number for when something fails between visits.
We agree the schedule with you and book visits around your opening hours. Results go into your logbooks and you get the reports and certificates by email, so they're to hand when your insurer, landlord or fire risk assessor asks.
Before any work starts, we can send our insurance details.
To set up a schedule, call 07477 017759 or email info@es-sw.co.uk with your address and what's currently in place. We'll arrange a site visit, check what's due and give you a clear quote before any work starts.

Commercial installation questions
Can you work outside our trading hours?
Yes. Work can be planned for early mornings, evenings or weekends so you can keep trading. Where the power has to go off, we'll agree when with you in advance and keep it as short as we can.
Do you install and test emergency lighting?
Yes. We fit emergency lighting and exit signs, and test existing systems. Emergency lighting should be checked regularly, with a short function test each month and a full-duration test once a year, and the results kept in a logbook. We can carry out the tests and tell you about any fittings that fail.
What certificates will we get?
New circuits and boards come with an Electrical Installation Certificate, and smaller alterations with a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. Both show the work meets BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations (18th Edition). If we inspect an existing installation, you get an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). Keep them for your insurer and your own records.
Can you upgrade us to a three-phase supply?
A three-phase supply upgrade is applied for through your distribution network operator, the company that runs the local electricity network, and they bring the new supply in. Once it's in, we install the three-phase distribution board and circuits. If you're not sure whether you need three-phase, we can look at your equipment and advise.
Do you carry out EICRs for commercial landlords?
Yes. We inspect and test commercial premises and give you an EICR, which lists anything that needs attention in order of urgency. It helps landlords and tenants show the installation is being kept safe under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. We can then quote for any work it recommends.
Can you look after all our electrical and fire safety checks?
Yes. We can carry out your EICR, emergency lighting tests, fire alarm servicing and PAT testing on one agreed schedule, with one contact. If something fails between visits, there's a 24/7 number to call.
How often does PAT testing need doing?
There's no fixed legal interval. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require equipment to be kept safe, and how often it's tested should depend on the type of equipment and how it's used. Hand-held tools on a busy site need checking far more often than a computer in an office.
